About Culbin Forest

Culbin Forest is located on the Moray Firth coast in Moray, Scotland, stretching across over 2,500 acres of planted conifer woodland interspersed with extensive sand dunes, moorland, and fertile farmland. Originally a vast area of shifting sand dunes, Culbin was afforested in the early 20th century to stabilize the land and halt dune encroachment on surrounding farmland and villages. The forest is dominated by Scots pine but also includes other conifer species and native trees. It supports a diverse range of wildlife, including deer, red squirrels, various bird species, and butterflies. Culbin’s coastal dunes and forest edges form important habitats for rare plants and insects adapted to the dynamic environment. Outdoor recreation opportunities abound with miles of well-maintained trails suitable for walking, running, and mountain biking winding through the forest and dunes. Anglers find good fishing in nearby waters, and bird watchers frequently visit to see seabirds and woodland species. The forest’s proximity to the historic town of Forres and the scenic coastline enhances its visitor appeal. Notable landmarks include the Culbin Sands, a huge expanse of drifting dunes once part of the vanished medieval farmland, and the vibrant ecosystem of the dune system itself. The forest is managed by Forestry and Land Scotland, emphasizing conservation, recreation, and sustainable timber production. Visitors appreciate the mix of vibrant coastal scenery and inland woodland, making Culbin Forest a peaceful retreat and a dynamic environment for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
